What Is AI, Really? A No-Hype Guide for Business Owners

What is AI, really?
Artificial Intelligence (AI) refers to computer systems that can perform tasks that normally require human intelligence โ like understanding language, recognising patterns, and making decisions.
The AI tools available today (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, etc.) are called Large Language Models (LLMs). They work by predicting the most likely next word based on patterns learned from huge amounts of text.
What AI is good at:
- Writing and editing text
- Summarising long documents
- Answering questions based on provided context
- Generating ideas and options
- Writing and explaining code
- Translating languages
What AI is NOT good at:
- Real-time information (unless connected to the web)
- Precise calculations and maths (use a calculator)
- Remembering your previous conversations (by default)
- Replacing human judgement on complex decisions
- Guaranteeing accuracy โ AI can "hallucinate" (make things up)
The key insight for business: AI is a productivity amplifier. It doesn't replace thinking โ it accelerates execution. The people who use AI well will do in 1 hour what used to take 4 hours. The people who ignore it will fall behind.
Which tools should you use?
- ChatGPT (OpenAI) โ Most well-known, excellent all-rounder, GPT-4o is the best free option
- Claude (Anthropic) โ Better for long documents, more cautious and thorough
- Gemini (Google) โ Integrated with Google Workspace, good for research
- Groq โ Ultra-fast responses, great for developers
- Perplexity โ AI + web search, great for research with sources
